10 Tips to Prevent College Application Stress
By: Christine Nam
Plan, plan ahead. Things go much smoother if you have a laid out plan. This goes along with tip number 2.
Don’t push things off, get started on things early! - The earlier you start, the less you worry about your deadlines. Dedicate a small portion of the week where you’ll work.
Stay organized. - with so many different colleges and so many things to do, keeping track of your progress can be a challenge. Using programs such as Notion or Google Calendar can be helpful in the long run.
Ask for your letters of recommendation early and from teachers with who you are close. Understand that teachers have many students and are also busy filling out other letters of recommendation so ask them early before it’s too late!
Get to know your guidance counselor and admissions officer. - while it may seem tough to try to navigate the college admission process, asking your mentors for help will make it go smoother.
When writing your essays, let your personal narrative come out. Application officers aren’t looking for a cliche story. They want to know more about YOU!
Ask adults around you to check your essays. Having new sets of eyes check you work can never be bad.
Have a balanced schedule - cramming all of the hardest courses your school can offer may “look great to colleges” but isn’t suggested. Make sure the coursework you take leaves you some time to sleep, eat, and care for your wellbeing.
Talk with your family and friends. Socializing is great on its own but discussing with loved ones can help clear up muddy waters and help guide you towards a path. Don’t get caught up in comparing yourself with others as all of us will walk a different path so focus on what is best for you!
Relax - Remember, not making it into your top priority college isn’t the end of the world (though it is disappointing). There are other excellent colleges and transferring is also an option. While these few months are challenging, you are strong and amazing!
