What obstacles are still facing the legalization of same sex marraige around the world

By Ava Piliang

Despite the strides that have been made in the recognition and legalization of same-sex marriage including 34 countries legalizing same-sex marriage there are lots of roadblocks still  facing same-sex marriage. For instance, despite being legal in 34 countries as of 2023 there are also 32 countries that have passed amendments that specifically ban same-sex marriage as well as legislation introduced in various countries that have been denied. A specific example of same-sex legalization legislation being introduced but not passed in a country’s chamber of representatives is in Japan, where a Japanese court ruled that marriage is still exclusively between a man and a woman.  While there have been strides in the legalization of same-sex marriage around the world the international community still has a long way to go in the recognition and acceptance of same sex marraige.
