What the Election Means for Anti-LGBTQ+ Bills
By Ava Piliang
As of January 16, 2023, thirteen days into the new congressional year, over 100 bills have been introduced across at least 11 states including Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana. The bills proposed include rights such as the ability to discuss LGBTQ rights, specifically sexual orientation and gender identity. The bills being introduced also aim at preventing transgender youth’s ability to access medicine and their ability to transition medically, and transgender youth’s ability to play sports with the gender they align with. The introduction of 100 anti-LGBTQ bills in 13 days highlights the institutional homophobia and transphobia embedded in the United States. The bills that are also introduced directly go against mounting evidence that says creating a supportive and safe environment for LGBTQ. It is imperative that activists block these bills from being passed as the bills could negatively impact the lives of millions across the country.
